Srirangapatna Gumbaz, Mausoleum in Mandya district, India
The Srirangapatna Gumbaz is a mausoleum in Mandya district featuring a large dome set on an elevated platform supported by black granite pillars. A rectangular garden surrounds the structure and allows visitors to walk around and view the monument from different angles.
The mausoleum was built between 1782 and 1784 and holds the graves of Tipu Sultan, his father Hyder Ali, and his mother Fakhr-Un-Nisa on the eastern side. This construction took place during a period of significant change in the region as British forces expanded their control.
The interior walls display painted stripe patterns connected to Tipu Sultan's life, while Persian inscriptions on the surfaces preserve names and historical information for visitors to read.
The site is open from sunrise to sunset with free admission and city bus number 316 connects it directly to Srirangapatna town. Early morning visits are best as fewer people arrive then and the heat is less intense.
When Tipu Sultan was buried in 1799, a thunderstorm broke out as British forces conducted the ceremony with full military honors. This natural event during such a significant moment remains largely unknown to many visitors.
