Mysore Zoo, Zoo in Mysore, India
Mysore Zoo is a zoological garden in Mysore, India, that spreads across a large area and provides habitat for numerous animal species. The enclosures are arranged by geographic regions and animal groups, so visitors walking the grounds can see animals from Asia, Africa and other parts of the world.
The garden was founded in 1892 as a private collection of Maharaja Chamaraja Wadiyar X and initially covered only a few hectares near the Summer Palace. During the 20th century the site opened to the public and grew into one of the oldest zoos in India.
Visitors see animals from across India and other continents, with many enclosures recreating natural habitats. School groups often come here to learn about native species and their protection.
The zoo is open every day except Tuesday, and admission tickets for adults, children and cameras are sold separately. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes as the paths can be long, and bring enough water especially on warm days.
The site houses all three rhinoceros species – white, black and Indian rhino – and plays an important role in their conservation in Asia. Visitors can observe these different species in separate enclosures and compare their differences directly.
