Jayalakshmi Vilas

Jayalakshmi Vilas is a three-building mansion in Mysore with more than 100 rooms, hundreds of windows, and carved doors set on large landscaped grounds. Today it houses three museums displaying archaeological finds, folk art collections, and royal family possessions.

The mansion was built in the early 20th century as a wedding gift from the maharaja to his daughter. It represents the architectural traditions of a royal family during a period of change in India's history.

The mansion is named after Princess Jayalakshmi Ammani, and visitors can see how rooms are furnished with royal furniture and personal belongings that reflect her life. The arrangement of spaces shows what daily living was like for a royal family of that period.

At the center of the house is a large hall with wooden pillars and a tall glass dome roof that floods the interior with natural light. This roofing design was an unusual blend of traditional and modern building techniques when it was created.
