Lower Mettur Hydroelectric Project, Cascade hydroelectric system in Tamil Nadu, India
The Lower Mettur Hydroelectric Project is a cascade system on the Kaveri River with four power plants distributed across different barrages between Mettur and Bhavani. Water flows through each station, powering turbines that step down the water level as it moves downriver.
The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board commissioned this facility in 1988 to address growing power demands in the southern region. The project grew out of efforts to harness the Kaveri River's hydroelectric potential across multiple sites.
This hydroelectric project represents Tamil Nadu's dedication to water resource management, connecting power generation with agricultural development in the Kaveri River basin.
The system is spread across several dam sites that remain accessible throughout the year, though water flow changes with seasons. Visiting requires preparation for local conditions and early morning timing often provides the best view of operations.
The system uses eight Bulb turbines, each producing 15 megawatts, a compact design that works well with the relatively gentle water drops between dam sites. This turbine type allows efficient power generation where traditional designs would be less effective.
