Kottiyoor Wildlife Sanctuary, Protected wildlife sanctuary in Kannur district, Kerala, India
Kottiyoor Wildlife Sanctuary spans 30 square kilometers of evergreen forests, semi-evergreen forests, deciduous forests, and grasslands with elevations from 200 to 1400 meters.
The Kerala government established Kottiyoor Wildlife Sanctuary in March 2011, designating it as a protected area within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve system.
The sanctuary borders traditional lands where local communities participate in conservation efforts and maintain connections to regional temples and customs.
Visitors require permits to enter the sanctuary, with access through Kelakam town, while Thalassery railway station and Kannur Airport provide transportation connections.
Scientists documented 41 mammal species, including the Travancore flying squirrel and Malabar slender loris, along with 179 bird species and 216 butterfly varieties.
