Nagarhole National Park, National park in Kodagu district, India.
Nagarhole is a protected area in Karnataka covering roughly 650 square kilometers (251 square miles) across forested hills and river valleys. The landscape shifts between thick woodland, open grassland and quiet water points where animals come to drink during the dry months.
The area served as hunting grounds for Mysore rulers before it was declared a park in 1988. It later gained special protection for tigers in 1999.
Several indigenous tribal communities maintain their traditional way of life within the park boundaries, depending on forest resources for sustenance.
The best months for watching animals run from October through May, when the dry season leaves fewer water sources available. Safari drives operate in the morning and late afternoon, when animals are most active.
The Kabini River draws elephants in large numbers and provides habitat for more than 250 bird species. Along its banks, herds can be watched drinking during the dry season.
