Sitabani Wildlife Reserve, Protected wildlife reserve in Nainital, India
Sitabani Wildlife Reserve is a protected area near Nainital spread across forested hills and steep gorges. The landscape provides habitat for large carnivores, elephants, and numerous bird species across varying elevations.
The reserve was established to protect a forest that had been severely damaged by traditional slash and burn farming in previous decades. Conservation efforts helped restore forest health and soil moisture across the land.
The reserve takes its name from Hindu mythology, referring to Sita, wife of Lord Rama, who is believed to have stayed in this forest. Visitors walking through the land can feel this cultural connection woven into the place.
The best time to visit is between November and June when weather conditions are favorable for exploring the terrain. Guided walks are recommended to observe wildlife safely and learn about the ecosystem from experienced local guides.
Leopards have adapted to live on the steep rocky cliffs of the reserve, actively avoiding the deeper forests where tigers roam. This spatial separation allows both predators to coexist without direct competition for territory and prey.
