Jahangirnagar University, Public university in Savar Upazila, Bangladesh.
Jahangirnagar University is a public university in Savar Upazila, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Dhaka, with five faculties and thirty-six departments. The campus holds several student residence halls, a central library containing more than one hundred thousand volumes, and a cultural center with an auditorium.
The university opened in 1970 as Jahangirnagar Muslim University and was renamed through legislation in 1973 following the independence of Bangladesh. Its founding aimed to expand higher education outside the capital and accommodate the growing number of students across the country.
The Teachers-Students Centre houses the Zahir Raihan Auditorium, which serves as the central venue for academic conferences, seminars, and student performances throughout the year.
Most buildings sit along walkways that pass through green areas, so getting around on foot or by bicycle is common. The library complex stands centrally between the academic blocks and the residence halls, making it easy to reach from all parts of the site.
A tall monument honoring the martyrs of the language movement stands near the main entrance and is considered one of the tallest structures of its kind in the country. The wide green areas attract many bird species, including migratory flocks that seek shelter in the ponds and under the trees during winter.
