Amar Ekushey, Language movement memorial at Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh
Amar Ekushey is an outdoor sculpture on the campus of Jahangirnagar University, near Dhaka, dedicated to those who died defending the Bengali language in 1952. The work is made up of several connected structural parts that together form an abstract figure rising from the ground.
The monument was designed by architect Jahanara Parvin and unveiled on February 21, 1991, the anniversary of the day in 1952 when students were killed during protests demanding recognition of the Bengali language. That original protest is seen as a turning point that eventually led to Bengali becoming an official language.
The name "Amar Ekushey" means "My 21st" in Bengali, referring to the 21st of February, now observed worldwide as International Mother Language Day. On that day each year, students and visitors gather here to recite poetry and lay flowers, making the site feel like a living part of the calendar.
The sculpture stands on the open grounds of Jahangirnagar University, which visitors can enter on foot without going through a formal entrance. The paths around it can get muddy or slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
Although the monument stands on a university campus, it was not commissioned by the university itself but by a group of students and faculty who organized the project independently. The fact that it was designed by a woman, Jahanara Parvin, was unusual for public architecture in Bangladesh at the time.
