Scarborough, Eastern district in Toronto, Canada
Scarborough is a district in eastern Toronto that stretches from Victoria Park Avenue to the Rouge River, bordered by Steeles Avenue to the north and Lake Ontario to the south. The area includes residential neighborhoods, commercial zones and green spaces that spread across several former villages now merged into one large urban area.
The settlement was founded as a township in 1850 and grew over a century from rural villages into a developing suburb. It joined Metropolitan Toronto in 1953 and became part of the amalgamated City of Toronto in 1998.
The neighborhood hosts shopping districts and restaurants from many countries, where residents shop in their own language and find dishes from home. Parks and community centers serve as meeting points for families who share traditions with the next generation while building new friendships.
Scarborough Town Centre serves as the main transit hub, where subway lines and bus connections come together. Most attractions and services sit along major roads, and a car helps reach parks and outer areas.
The Rouge Valley holds remnants of 19th-century farms and mills that visitors can discover along hiking trails. The bluffs along the lake offer sandy beaches that draw many locals for swimming in summer.
