Ovayok Territorial Park

Ovayok Territorial Park is a conservation area in the Arctic tundra featuring three distinct esker ridges, with one reaching about 183 meters in height. The landscape includes small lakes and open terrain with low-growing vegetation across rolling hills.

The area shows evidence of settlements from Thule and Paleo-Eskimo peoples, confirmed by archaeological finds like tent rings and old food storage sites scattered across the terrain. These traces of human presence span several centuries.

The three hills in this place hold meaning from an Inuit story about giants who became landscape features while searching for food. This narrative shapes how visitors understand and see the formations when they walk through.

The site sits about 15 kilometers east of Cambridge Bay and is accessible by foot through marked trails that lead to former Inuit camp areas and wildlife viewing spots. Visitors should prepare for harsh Arctic weather and bring appropriate gear for the environment.

The location serves as a stopover for more than 50 migratory bird species as they travel during their yearly journeys. The lakes support Arctic char populations, while large herds of muskoxen roam and graze freely across the open tundra.
