Provencher Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Winnipeg, Canada.
Provencher Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge crossing the Red River in Winnipeg with a central tower reaching 57 meters above the roadway. The structure carries four traffic lanes alongside Esplanade Riel, a dedicated pedestrian walkway that includes dining space.
The first crossing at this location started in 1882 with a ferry along Notre Dame Street before multiple bridge versions replaced that service. The current bridge evolved from these earlier river crossings.
The bridge links downtown Winnipeg with the French-speaking neighborhood of St. Boniface, serving as a daily crossing for residents moving between the two areas. Both communities see it as part of their local routine rather than just infrastructure.
The bridge is open daily for both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, with walkers using the Esplanade Riel pathway. During rainy or cold weather, conditions can be slippery especially on the walkways.
The suspended restaurant above the Red River is one of the few bridge dining spaces in North America offering meals with river views. This combination of crossing and eating makes it an unusual public structure.
