Carleton School of Journalism is a journalism education center in Ottawa offering undergraduate and graduate programs in journalism, media production, and communication studies. Located within the Faculty of Public Affairs, it prepares students for professional careers through classroom instruction and hands-on training.
The school was established in 1945 with seven students and awarded its first degrees in 1946. Since then it has grown into a recognized journalism institution that has trained many media professionals.
The Mary Ann Shadd Cary Lecture Series brings professionals and academics together to discuss how Canadian journalism and media have changed over time. These events let visitors hear direct conversations about how news and reporting work in the country today.
Students are required to complete internships in professional media organizations to gain hands-on experience as part of their degree requirements. These multi-month workplace assignments give them real-world training in actual news and media environments.
From 2006 to 2011 the school ran the Rwanda Initiative program that connected it with the National University of Rwanda. This partnership showed how the institution worked to strengthen journalism education standards in other countries.
