Sioux Narrows Bridge, Truss bridge in Sioux Narrows, Ontario.
Sioux Narrows Bridge is a truss bridge that crosses the narrow strait separating two sections of Lake of the Woods along Highway 71. The structure connects Regina Bay to Whitefish Bay and carries regular vehicle traffic across the water.
The original structure was built in 1936 and was one of North America's longest wooden bridges of its era. After nearly 70 years of service, it was replaced by the current steel structure completed in 2007.
The bridge location marks the site of an 18th-century battle where Anishnaabe and Cree nations successfully defended their territory against Sioux forces.
The bridge accommodates regular vehicle traffic without restrictions and provides a safe crossing. The structure is also accessible for pedestrians and cyclists making it useful for various types of travelers.
The new bridge incorporates salvaged timber from the original 1936 structure within its design. This material reuse connects the old span with the modern construction while honoring its legacy.
