Zippel Bay State Park, State park on Lake of the Woods, Minnesota.
Zippel Bay State Park is a state-protected area along Lake of the Woods in Minnesota with white sandy shores. The grounds contain two separate camping zones that together provide places for people to set up tents and recreational vehicles.
Wilhelm Zippel founded a fishing operation here in 1887, which led to the growth of a small settlement in the area. A post office opened in 1909, marking the village's development into an established community.
The lake shore has long served as a gathering place for people seeking fish and game from the water. You can still see how fishing traditions shape the way locals and visitors interact with this landscape today.
You can fish here throughout the year for walleye, sauger, and smallmouth bass in the lake's cold waters. Winter conditions are harsh, so visitors should bring proper equipment and be prepared for difficult weather.
The land where this park sits was once covered by an ancient glacial lake thousands of years ago. The mineral-rich sandy soil left behind supports jack pine and birch trees that dominate the landscape today.
