Qausuittuq National Park

Qausuittuq National Park, National park in Nunavut, Canada

Qausuittuq National Park occupies the northern section of Bathurst Island and covers approximately 11,000 square kilometers of varied Arctic terrain. The landscape shows wetlands, plateaus, bluffs, and hills shaped by past glaciation.

Archaeological evidence shows human settlements on Bathurst Island dating back around 4,500 years. British naval expeditions explored the region during the 1800s and left traces of their explorations behind.

The name Qausuittuq comes from Inuktitut and refers to the winter period when the sun stays below the horizon in this Arctic location. Visitors can experience these extreme light conditions firsthand, as they shape how time and daily rhythms feel in this region.

Reaching the park requires traveling by chartered aircraft, boat, snowmobile, or dogsled from the nearby settlement of Resolute. Visitors should prepare for extreme weather conditions and very limited supplies in the area.

The park protects habitat for threatened animals including Peary caribou, Arctic wolves, and muskoxen. Marine life such as narwhals and bowhead whales also inhabit the Arctic waters here.
