Changsha Metro, Metro system in Changsha, Hunan, China
Changsha Metro is a rapid transit system with six operating lines and one maglev line serving the city and nearby Xiangtan. The trains run daily from approximately 6:30 am to 11 pm, with most stations located underground while others run above ground, featuring bilingual signage in Chinese and English with real-time stop indicators on all trains.
The system began operating in April 2014 when Line 2 opened, making Changsha the 18th city in China to establish a metro system. Subsequent years brought additional lines online, with a major 2024 expansion extending Line 1 by nearly 10 kilometers and continuing to expand the network's reach across the city.
The Changsha Metro is an integral part of daily life in the city, connecting residents and visitors across different neighborhoods. During rush hours in the morning and evening, large groups of workers and students travel together, reflecting the city's organized rhythm and practical approach to moving through urban spaces.
Tickets can be purchased at machines in each station, via apps like Alipay or WeChat Pay, or with a special Xiaoxiang Card valid for buses and trains. All stations feature clear signage and navigation aids, while passengers with accessibility needs can request escort services or use green channels at entrances designed for quick access.
During heavy rain and bad weather, the metro is widely viewed by residents as a safe and fast way to avoid congestion and stay dry. Line 3 stands out by being the only line extending beyond Changsha into the neighboring city of Xiangtan, creating regional connections that transcend city boundaries.
