Penglai Pavilion, Fortified tower in Penglai, China.
Penglai Pavilion is a fortified tower complex at the northwest corner of the Shandong Peninsula where the Yellow Sea meets the Bohai Sea. The structure displays classical military fortification architecture with multiple buildings and walls that define the compound grounds.
The complex was built during the Ming Dynasty as a military harbor post to defend the coast. It later became an important symbol of coastal defense in Chinese military history.
The pavilion connects to Chinese mythology as the legendary departure point of the Eight Immortals in classical tales. Locals and visitors alike come to experience this mythical significance when walking through the complex.
The grounds are accessible with pathways connecting the various buildings and viewing areas throughout the complex. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the site spreads across multiple levels and must be explored on foot.
Natural mirages often appear over the sea surface near the pavilion during the months of May and June. This optical phenomenon results from specific weather conditions and light that make the water seem to shimmer and shift mysteriously.
