So Uk Estate, Public housing complex in Sham Shui Po District, Hong Kong.
So Uk Estate is a residential complex in Sham Shui Po with 14 buildings ranging from 21 to 41 floors that house about 7,000 rental units. The site is connected by ten lift towers, eleven footbridges, and ten escalators that also lead to nearby roads and public transportation.
The original estate was built between 1955 and 1963, replacing squatter settlements in the area. A complete redevelopment started in 2012 due to rising maintenance costs and to modernize the infrastructure.
The estate preserves three elements locals call the Three Treasures: a small white building, pavilions decorated with wall paintings, and a gold-painted entrance gate. These features show how residents have marked their surroundings and created places that matter to them.
The site is accessible on foot, with stairs, ramps, and elevators for different mobility needs. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the grounds are multi-level and spread across a large area.
The redeveloped site includes a shopping center with about 30 shops and recreational facilities such as badminton and basketball courts for residents. These additions make the complex largely self-contained for daily living and leisure.
