North Lamma Public Library, Public library in Yung Shue Wan, Lamma Island, Hong Kong
The North Lamma Public Library is a public library on the ground and first floors of a building on Yung Shue Wan Main Street, next to the ferry pier on Lamma Island. It holds reading areas, a collection of Chinese and English materials, and a Heritage and Cultural Showroom on the ground floor.
The library was set up as part of Hong Kong's public library network, which expanded to bring library services to outlying islands. The ground floor showroom holds archaeological objects found on Lamma Island, showing that people settled here long before the modern village took shape.
The building's concrete surfaces carry Chinese calligraphy, and wooden details draw from the way books were traditionally made and bound. These touches are easy to notice as you walk through the space and give the library a character rooted in local craft.
The library closes on Thursdays and some public holidays, so it is worth checking before you go. The space covers just two floors, making it easy to get around, and mornings tend to be quieter than afternoons.
Several reading spots inside the library look directly out to sea, with ferries and fishing boats passing within sight. It is one of the few libraries where you can sit with a book and watch maritime traffic go by at the same time.
