Sandy Bay, Beach and residential area in Hong Kong Island, China
Sandy Bay is a bay along the southern coast of Hong Kong Island, with a sandy beach and residential neighborhoods facing the water. Behind the shore, Mount Davis rises steeply, while schools and sports facilities occupy much of the land around the beach.
The bay was once a landing point for fishing boats and remained on the edge of Hong Kong's urban growth for a long time. Over the course of the 20th century, schools, sports grounds and housing gradually replaced the quieter shoreline activities.
The Chinese Christian Cemetery sits on the hillside above the bay and was established for the local Chinese Christian community. Visitors walking through it can see how Western religious customs and Chinese burial traditions appear side by side on the same grounds.
A minibus connects the bay to Kennedy Town MTR Station, making it reachable from central Hong Kong without a car. The area around the beach is easy to walk through, so arriving by public transport and exploring on foot works well.
Sandy Bay faces west, which means the sun sets directly over the open water during autumn and winter when the sky tends to be clearest. This orientation is rare among the beaches of Hong Kong Island, making it an unexpected spot to watch the evening light fade over the sea.
