Kennedy Town Abattoir, Former slaughterhouse in Kennedy Town, Hong Kong
Kennedy Town Abattoir was a meat processing facility in Kennedy Town that served Hong Kong's food supply needs. It was an industrial complex with multiple buildings and functions, situated near the waterfront in the western part of the island.
The first slaughterhouse in the area began operations in 1889 and relocated to a new building in 1968. This meant the original location served the city's meat processing needs for nearly 80 years before operations moved elsewhere.
The facility was a working part of Kennedy Town's character for many decades, sitting alongside markets and small factories in a industrial neighborhood. It showed how the city sourced and processed meat for its growing population during a time when such work was more visible in daily life.
The location no longer exists as a physical site, since the building was demolished between 2007 and 2009. The area has been redeveloped into residential and commercial spaces, so visitors can only explore the history of what once stood here.
Beyond the main slaughtering area, the complex included an incinerator and livestock holding pens for pigs and sheep. These additions showed it was more than just a simple butchering site but rather a complete meat processing operation.
