Botanischer Garten Rombergpark, Botanical garden with English landscaping in Dortmund, Germany.
Rombergpark is a landscape garden in Dortmund that covers 68 hectares and brings together woody plants from temperate climates alongside greenhouses for tropical and subtropical species. The paths lead through different zones, from open meadows to dense tree plantings, while the glasshouses provide controlled environments for delicate species.
The estate began in 1820 as private property of the von Romberg family and remained in their hands for nearly a century. After the city of Dortmund purchased the land in 1927, the site gradually became a public botanical garden focused on woody plants.
The garden's winding trails allow visitors to observe how bark textures, leaf shapes, and growth patterns differ from one continent to another without leaving the grounds. People visit not only for study but also to walk under tall canopies during every season, following paths that reveal new blooms or autumn colors at each turn.
The outdoor grounds remain open around the clock, while the glasshouses follow fixed hours and work well for visits on rainy days. Guided walks take place regularly and offer insight into plant diversity without requiring prior knowledge.
The collection holds roughly 4,500 species of woody plants, making it one of the largest in Europe, though many visitors barely notice the scale because the plantings blend into the landscape design. The garden functions as both a place for walking and a research site, with both roles coexisting without interfering with each other.
