Gasometer Phoenix-West, Industrial heritage monument in Dortmund, Germany.
The Gasometer Phoenix-West is a cylindrical steel structure in southern Dortmund with a total height of about 77 meters and storage capacity of about 120,000 cubic meters. Its interior has been fully renovated and now houses sports activities, exhibitions, concerts, restaurants, and office spaces.
The structure was built as part of the Phoenix-West industrial complex to store coking and blast furnace gases from active steel production. After the industrial plant closed, the gasometer underwent a major conversion.
The structure is part of the Route Industriekultur, a network of industrial landmarks that showcases the mining and steel production heritage of the Ruhr region. Visitors can see today how such sites are being reinvented while remaining central to city life.
The site is easily accessible and offers plenty of space to explore, especially when visiting the different events or facilities. The visitor experience varies by season and programming, so checking ahead about current activities is recommended.
This was the first project worldwide where a gasometer retained its original cylindrical exterior form while its interior was completely redesigned for new purposes. This innovative approach became a model for repurposing similar industrial structures elsewhere.
