Eiserne Bridge, Metal bridge in Mitte, Germany
The Eiserne Bridge carries traffic across a small Spree River tributary in central Berlin's Mitte district. Both cars and pedestrians use this crossing to move between the neighborhoods on either side of the waterway.
Wehrmacht soldiers destroyed the bridge in April 1945 during the Battle of Berlin to block Soviet forces advancing across the river. Reconstruction after the war restored the crossing for civilian and vehicle traffic.
The bridge stands near several educational institutions, including the German Historical Museum and Anne Frank Centre, which document German history.
The bridge is open to both vehicles and foot traffic with public transportation connections nearby. You can easily include it in a walk through central Berlin as it sits on well-traveled routes connecting major neighborhoods.
