Art Collection of the University Göttingen, University art collection in Göttingen, Germany
The Art Collection of the University Göttingen is a collection of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and sculptures primarily housed in the Auditorium Building. The holdings contain European and artistic works from various periods in a compact yet rich collection.
The collection began in 1795 when Johann Wilhelm Zschorn donated over 270 paintings, transported to Göttingen by three horse-drawn wagons. This initial gift laid the foundation for what would later become a diverse artistic institution.
The collection displays works by artists such as Dürer, Botticelli, and Rembrandt from different periods of European art history. Visitors can explore pieces that reflect the taste and artistic preferences of multiple generations.
The collection opens for regular public tours held on the third Sunday of each month. Specialized exhibitions and academic presentations take place throughout the year, offering various ways to experience the works.
A painting by Jan Brueghel the Elder, stolen for 46 years, returned to the collection in 2019. This recovery highlights the value and significance of these artistic works to the institution.
