Fernsehturm Essen, Communications tower in Holsterhausen, Essen, Germany.
Fernsehturm Essen is a concrete transmission tower in the Holsterhausen district of southwestern Essen. It rises 159 meters with a slender cylindrical shaft and no observation platform or publicly accessible levels.
The tower was built by Deutsche Bundespost to extend television broadcasting across the Ruhr region during the postwar decades. It belongs to a series of transmitter towers constructed across western Germany using a standardized design during that era.
The tower is a familiar landmark in the Holsterhausen skyline, visible between rooftops from several streets in the neighborhood. Locals use it as a quiet reference point when moving through this southwestern part of Essen.
The tower is closed to the public and can only be seen from the outside. Walking along the nearby streets in Holsterhausen gives clear views of the shaft, especially from open spots near the surrounding green areas.
Although the tower stands at 95 meters above sea level, its shaft still rises well above most buildings in the area. Its design type, the FMT 13, was replicated in several other German cities, making it one of a number of near-identical towers built to the same plan.
