Deutschlandhaus, Office and commercial building in downtown Essen, Germany.
Deutschlandhaus is a nine-story office and commercial building standing 37 meters tall in downtown Essen. It houses retail spaces, office floors, administrative facilities, and the Lindengalerie shopping arcade at street level and lower floors.
Built in 1929 by Jacob Koerfer, this was Essen's first high-rise structure. Initially serving as the technical town hall, it marked the city's shift toward modern vertical construction.
The building shaped Essen's city center with its towering presence during the era when the city transformed into a modern business district. Visitors today can observe the facade details and understand how this structure changed the urban landscape.
The entrance is located downtown and easily accessible on foot. The shopping arcade inside provides retail options and passageways through various floor levels.
The building houses a rare operating paternoster elevator, a system with endlessly chained open compartments. This early elevator type is seldom found in Essen anymore and represents a nearly forgotten engineering approach from the past.
