Arta Region

The Arta region encompasses 1,800 square kilometers of varied terrain, from mountains to plains, situated between the Gulf of Tadjourah and Somaliland border.

The region gained its administrative status in 2003 when the government reorganized territories from Dikhil and Djibouti regions into a separate administrative division.

The region maintains strong connections with nomadic traditions, as local communities practice seasonal migrations between coastal areas and mountain settlements throughout the year.

The regional capital Arta, located 42 kilometers from Djibouti City, serves as a temperature refuge during summer months with temperatures 10 degrees lower than coastal areas.

Scientists operate a significant seismic detection network at the Arta Geophysical Observatory, monitoring geological activity across the Horn of Africa since 1972.
