Mostaganem

Mostaganem extends across both banks of Wadi Aïn Sefra river, with modern districts on the left bank and traditional Tidgit quarter on the right.

The settlement originated as Murustuge in the 11th century, later becoming a commercial port after Ottoman admiral Barbarossa captured it in 1516.

The city structure reflects its diverse heritage through distinct quarters, including French colonial architecture and traditional Muslim neighborhoods separated by natural ravines.

The Mediterranean port handles commercial cargo while the beaches of La Salamandre and Les Sablettes provide water access for residents and visitors.

The regional agricultural production transformed from colonial-era vineyards to current cultivation of cereals, citrus fruits, and cotton on the Mostaganem Plateau.
