Hautes Plaines, Plateau in northern Algeria
Hautes Plaines is an expansive highland region in northern Algeria positioned between two mountain ranges and rising to around 1,300 meters (4,300 feet) elevation. Several provincial capitals, including Setif, Tiaret, and Djelfa, are located across the plateau and serve as entry points for visitors.
For centuries, this region has served as a strategic link between eastern and western Algeria. Its position enabled trade routes and cultural connections that shaped the broader history of the country.
Shepherds and their herds of sheep and goats are part of the daily rhythm across the plateau's villages and grasslands. Local communities have maintained these pastoral traditions for generations, moving with the seasons.
The region is accessible through several provincial cities that offer accommodation and services for travelers. Visitors should be prepared for variable weather conditions and the high elevation of the area.
After rainy periods, water pools in low areas across the plateau and forms temporary salt lakes. When the water evaporates, it leaves behind striking white salt deposits that cover the ground.
