Pyramid of Khui, Ancient Egyptian pyramid in Dara, Egypt
Pyramid of Khui is an ancient Egyptian burial structure with a rectangular base located in Dara. The complex features thick mudbrick walls enclosing a central hollow space, with a limestone-lined passage from the north leading to an underground chamber.
This structure was built during the First Intermediate Period around 2150 BCE and is attributed to Khui, who may have been a ruler or a regional governor. It represents a time when pyramid construction was changing across Egypt.
The underground chamber shows how ancient Egyptians created protected spaces deep below the surface for their rulers. This practice reflected their beliefs about the journey after death.
Access is through a horizontal corridor on the north side leading to a vaulted gallery. Visitors should be prepared for confined spaces and bring lighting for the underground sections.
The outer walls reach an unusual thickness of about 35 meters and were originally filled with sand and gravel. This massive construction served both structural stability and protection for what lay inside.
