Deir el-Muallaq

Deir el-Muallaq is a monastery complex with three churches, including the ancient Church of the Virgin Mary dating to the 12th century and a stone fortress from the 6th century. The site houses an extensive manuscript library with religious texts spanning multiple centuries.

The monastery was founded in the 4th century and grew over time as a center for Christian communities in the region. Its architecture shows how the complex expanded and developed through successive periods.

The Church of al-Adhra stands over a cave where local tradition holds that Mary and Jesus rested during their travels through Egypt. This story shapes how visitors experience the sacred space today.

Visit in early morning hours to explore the complex calmly and avoid crowds. Wear comfortable shoes and allow plenty of time to walk through the different churches and courtyards at a leisurely pace.

In 2013 the site suffered fires that damaged buildings and affected the priceless collection of ancient Coptic manuscripts. These events left visible marks that became part of the monastery's recent history.
