Tanis, Ancient Egyptian capital in Nile Delta, Egypt.
Tanis is an archaeological site in the northeastern Nile Delta near Husseiniya, encompassing the ruins of a former ancient Egyptian capital. The sprawling grounds show toppled columns, stone fragments with hieroglyphs, and the foundations of several temple complexes.
The city rose to importance during the 21st and 22nd Dynasties when it became the capital of Lower Egypt. Later rulers expanded the temple precincts and built their burial chambers directly next to the sanctuaries.
The site also carries the biblical name Zoan and appears in several ancient texts under this designation. Visitors today see the remains of a temple complex that once served as the religious center for an entire region.
Sturdy footwear helps on the uneven ground among the stones and debris. Visitors should bring sun protection and water, as there is little shade across the open grounds.
Some pharaohs chose this location for their tombs because they wanted their resting places near the temples. This uncommon arrangement differs from the traditional burial practice in the Valley of the Kings.
