Ain Sokhna, Beach resort town in Suez Governorate, Egypt.
Ain Sokhna is a beach resort town on the western shore of the Gulf of Suez with sandy beaches backed by mountains. The developed area stretches about 60 kilometers along the Red Sea coastline with modern hotels, resorts, and water sports facilities arranged between the beach and mountain backdrop.
Archaeological excavations beginning in 1999 revealed an ancient Egyptian port that connected mining regions in the Sinai Peninsula with Memphis. This trading post played an important role in transporting turquoise and copper from eastern mines to the ancient capital.
The name Ain Sokhna means Hot Springs, referring to natural sulfur springs that flow from Gebel Ataqa, the northernmost mountain of the Eastern Desert. Visitors can observe and experience these warm waters integrated into the modern coastal facilities.
The town sits approximately 120 kilometers east of Cairo and is reachable within about two hours by car for visitors seeking beach activities. Most guests choose day trips or weekend stays since the drive from the capital is short enough for spontaneous visits.
The Galala Cable Car system connects different levels of the town while offering views of the Red Sea, mountains, and modern coastal developments. This feature makes transportation between the elevated areas and the beach level a memorable part of the visit.
