Aswan Low Dam, Gravity dam and hydroelectric station in Aswan Governorate, Egypt.
The Aswan Low Dam spans 2,142 meters across the Nile River with 180 sluices designed to control water flow and silt distribution.
British engineers completed the initial construction of the dam in 1902, making it the largest masonry dam in the world at that time.
The dam transformed agricultural methods along the Nile by regulating water levels, enabling farmers to plant crops throughout the year.
Two power stations, Aswan I commissioned in 1960 and Aswan II from the 1980s, generate electricity for surrounding communities.
The structure contains a navigation lock that eliminated the need for ships to make overland portage past the first cataract of the Nile.
