Saluga and Ghazal islands, Nature reserve in Aswan Governorate, Egypt
Saluga and Ghazal are two granite islands in the Nile River located south of Aswan, protected as a nature reserve. The islands support diverse bird species and plant life adapted to riverine conditions.
These islands were designated as a protected area in 1986 to preserve the region's biological diversity. The protection status was created because of the endangered animal and plant species that live there.
The name Saluga means waterfall in Nubian language, while Ghazal refers to ancient vegetation that grew on these Egyptian islands.
The best way to reach the islands is by sailing boat or motorboat from Aswan. Bringing binoculars helps visitors observe birds and plants up close.
The black ibis, a rare bird with glossy black feathers, was chosen as the symbol of the reserve. About sixty bird species find shelter here.
