Kitchener's Island, Botanical river island in Aswan, Egypt.
The oval-shaped El Nabatat Island extends less than one kilometer in length within the Nile River, next to the larger Elephantine Island.
Lord Kitchener received this seven-hectare island as a reward following his military success during the Mahdist War between 1896 and 1898.
The Aswan Botanical Garden maintains research facilities focused on studying the growth patterns and sustainability of various consumable agricultural crops.
Visitors reach the island through water taxis or felucca boats that dock at the southeastern side, with regular service available throughout daylight hours.
The botanical collection includes thirty different palm tree species and numerous plants from India, creating an unexpected tropical environment in the desert.
