Aswan Dam, Gravity dam in Aswan Governorate, Egypt
The Aswan Dam extends 3600 meters across the Nile River, with a height of 111 meters and a granite-covered clay core structure.
Construction began in 1956 under President Gamal Abdel Nasser's leadership, with Soviet support after the United States withdrew from the project in 1959.
The dam's creation necessitated the relocation of over 90,000 Nubian residents and prompted the movement of ancient temples to prevent submersion.
The dam's hydroelectric plant contains twelve turbines that generate 10,000 GWh annually, supplying a substantial portion of Egypt's electricity needs.
Lake Nasser, formed by the dam, extends 480 kilometers and holds between 150 and 165 cubic kilometers of water for agricultural irrigation.
