Monastery of Saint Simeon
Monastery of Saint Simeon, 7th century monastery ruins near Aswan, Egypt
The fortress-like structure spans 5,000 square meters with stone walls, chambers, and remaining columns overlooking the western bank of the Nile River.
Built in the 7th century and dedicated to Anba Hedra, the monastery housed 300 monks until its destruction by Saladin's forces in 1173.
The monastery served as a base for monks who traveled to Nubia to spread Christianity, leaving behind evidence of religious conversions through wall inscriptions.
Visitors can reach the monastery via a short ferry ride from Aswan, with camel transportation available at the site for exploring the surrounding area.
Ancient graffiti remains visible in the pilgrim chambers, including markings from a Muslim traveler who visited before the monastery's destruction.
