Famine Stela, Ancient stone inscription on Sehel Island, Egypt
The Famine Stela contains 32 columns of hieroglyphic text carved into natural granite, featuring detailed scenes of deities and royal offerings.
Dating from the Ptolemaic period, this inscription narrates a seven-year drought during Pharaoh Djoser's reign in the Third Dynasty of Ancient Egypt.
The stone depicts three Egyptian deities - Khnum, Satis, and Anuket - receiving offerings from Pharaoh Djoser in a traditional religious ceremony.
Visitors reach the inscription by taking a boat to Sehel Island from Aswan, with morning hours providing optimal lighting for viewing the hieroglyphs.
A natural fissure runs horizontally through the rock surface, affecting the carved text and creating gaps in the ancient narrative.
