Ain Shams University, Public university in Abbassia, Cairo, Egypt.
Ain Shams University is a public university in Abbassia in the Cairo Governorate, spread across eight locations throughout Greater Cairo. The main campus houses administrative buildings, libraries, student residences, and several faculties in sprawling grounds.
The institution opened in July 1950 under the name Ibrahim Pasha's University on the former grounds of Zafarana Palace. It was established as the third non-religious public university in the country.
The first faculties received their names at the founding ceremony and began teaching immediately across different disciplines. Today students from across Greater Cairo and the whole country come here to attend lectures and seminars.
The institution offers degree programs at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels across different fields. Visitors should note that individual locations are spread across the city and may each have their own opening times.
The institution began teaching immediately after its inauguration without any academic trial period or preparatory phase. Its founding marked a turning point for access to higher education in Egypt at that time.
