Castillo de Frigiliana

Castillo de Frigiliana is a medieval fortress whose foundations and walls still remain on a hilltop overlooking the surrounding area. The site shows the layout of a defensive stronghold that once commanded the valley and coastline below.

The fortress was built between the 9th and 11th centuries during the period of Arab settlement in the region. It was destroyed in the 16th century, marking the end of an era when such strongholds defended the coastline.

The ruins are woven into the local identity of Frigiliana and serve as a reminder of the Moorish past that shaped the region. Visitors can experience this history through the stones and structures that still mark the landscape today.

The site is accessible via marked pathways that lead to several viewpoints across the hilltop. From these spots, you can see out over the Mediterranean and the surrounding countryside.

The fortress relied on an ingenious water supply system that transported water through channels carved directly into the mountainside. These ancient channels reveal the engineering skill of those who lived here and managed to bring water to such a remote hilltop location.
