Awash River, Major river system in eastern Ethiopia
The Awash River flows roughly 1,200 kilometers from the highlands near Ginchi through volcanic terrain to Lake Abbe. Along its course it feeds several dams that provide water for farming and generate electricity.
The river remained largely unexplored until the early 20th century when expeditions began mapping its full course. Human settlement along its banks goes back thousands of years.
The river sustains several ethnic communities along its banks who depend on its waters for farming and livestock herding. These people maintain ways of life that have remained tied to the river for generations.
The best time to visit is during the dry season when water levels are lower and access routes are easier to navigate. Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as much of the river flows through open terrain.
The lower Awash gorge is an important location for paleontology where researchers have discovered fossils of early human ancestors. These findings help scientists understand the story of human evolution.
