Pen, District center in Raigad, India
Pen is a town in Raigad district between Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra, located at an elevation of 18 meters on the banks of the Bhogavati creek. The center has several artisan quarters and features typical infrastructure of a small settlement.
The settlement developed as a port city with trade connections to Egypt and was ruled by the Silaharas from the 9th to 12th century. This early trading importance shaped the place for centuries.
The town is known for crafting Ganesha idols in specialized artisan lanes, where sculptors pass down traditional techniques from one generation to the next. Visitors can observe craftspeople working with clay in these areas, shaping and decorating their pieces.
The town is easily accessible from nearby cities and has basic services for visitors. The best time to visit is during the dry months when weather conditions are pleasant.
Salt and other minerals are extracted in facilities in the western area, using the region's specific geological conditions. This ancient industry is less visible today but remains part of local economic life.
