Bharat Insurance Building, Indo-Saracenic building on Anna Salai, Chennai, India.
Bharat Insurance Building is a stone structure on Anna Salai in Chennai featuring patterned glass panels, domes, spires, arches, verandahs, and tall minarets. Its exterior shows detailed stonework throughout, from the large wall surfaces to the ornamental elements at the top.
The structure was built in 1897 as the Kardyl Building and changed hands several times before becoming property of Life Insurance Corporation of India in 1956. These ownership shifts shaped how the building was used over many decades.
The building reflects a blend of Islamic design with Indian construction methods from the late 1800s, visible in its ornamental details throughout. Visitors notice how these two traditions come together in the stonework, creating a style specific to that era's architectural practice.
The building has stood unoccupied since 1998 and protective coverings were applied by court order due to structural concerns. Visitors can see it only from the outside while much of its facade remains covered for safety reasons.
A 2010 court ruling protected this structure as one of 400 designated buildings, preventing its planned demolition by insurance authorities. This made it one of the rare cases where legal status saved a building from destruction.
