Fort St. Anthony of Simbor, Portuguese colonial fort in Simbor, India
The fort stands on an islet at the mouth of the Sahil River, featuring stone walls and a rectangular defensive perimeter near the coast.
Constructed in 1722 by Portuguese authorities to combat Sanganian pirates, the fort initially accommodated a garrison of thirty soldiers for coastal defense.
The fort includes remains of a chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony, reflecting the Portuguese religious influence during the colonial period in India.
The structure is accessible by boat from the mainland, with visits recommended during low tide when the surrounding waters are calmer.
The fort maintained its position as the last Portuguese military outpost in India until December 1961, marking the end of colonial presence.
