Uparkot Caves, Buddhist caves complex in Junagadh, India.
The Uparkot Caves are a Buddhist cave complex in Junagadh carved across three levels into the rock. The site contains large chambers, corridors, and water tanks hollowed directly from the stone formation.
The caves were excavated between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD with architectural styles reflecting Satavahana and Graeco-Scythian influences. This period established the design and structure that survives today.
Monks used these stone chambers as meditation spaces and gathering areas, with stone bench recesses carved into the walls at regular intervals.
The caves are accessible from sunrise to sunset and can be reached by climbing near the Adi Kadi Vav structure in the eastern section. Wear comfortable shoes as the paths are uneven and require climbing several staircases.
Within the complex sits a deep water tank roughly 11 feet on each side, surrounded by a covered veranda with decorated stone pillars. This construction demonstrates the craftsmanship invested in every detail.
