Uparkot Fort, Ancient fort in Junagadh, India
The massive stone walls of Uparkot Fort rise 300 feet above ground level, featuring three successive defensive gateways and round bastions.
The fort dates back to 319 BCE during the Mauryan Empire, with Chandragupta Maurya establishing it as one of his military strongholds.
The fort contains Buddhist caves, two stepwells named Adi-Kadi Vav and Navghan Kuvo, and a mosque with four minarets from different periods.
Visitors can access the fort daily from sunrise to sunset, with separate fees for still cameras and guided tours available in multiple languages.
The fort walls house ancient cannon emplacements, including a Turkish cannon used in 1538 against Portuguese forces in Diu.
