Khapra Kodiya Caves

Khapra Kodiya Caves form a complex of multiple chambers carved directly into rock, with rooms arranged in an L-shaped pattern along a ridge. The structure includes residential spaces oriented east to west and sits near Uparkot fort in the landscape.

The caves were created during Emperor Ashoka's reign in the 3rd to 4th century BCE as shelters for Buddhist monks. Ancient markings and short inscribed letters on the walls document this early period.

The caves reveal how Buddhist monks lived and practiced in this region for extended periods. The layout shows the way a monastic community organized its daily life within the rock chambers.

The caves sit roughly 2 kilometers from town center and are straightforward to access. Visitors should expect uneven surfaces inside and wear comfortable shoes for walking through the chambers.

The site features specialized water tanks built into its design, showing how ancient residents managed and stored water. This sophisticated water system was essential for survival during monsoon seasons in the region.
